How Does IPL Work?
Standard IPL treatments, also called photofacials, work by delivering pulses of intense light energy to targeted areas in a similar way to laser skin treatments. Pigmented areas absorb the light energy, breaking up the discoloration. Lumecca IPL takes this concept to another level by delivering up to 3 times more energy than standard IPL treatments. This makes it especially effective for treating vascular and pigmented lesions, producing optimal results in fewer sessions.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Lumecca IPL?
People concerned about skin discoloration, such as pigmented lesions, sun damage, or age spots, get superior results from Lumecca IPL treatments. As with standard IPL procedures, the best candidates often have freckles, rosacea, or other forms of red and brown pigmentation, and they want their skin to appear more evenly colored. Women looking for a treatment to minimize melasma in the Newport Beach and Corona areas are excellent candidates for Lumecca IPL treatments. It's also ideal for patients who lead very busy lives and need results after 2 or 3 treatment sessions. Check out our skincare treatment packages for complementary treatment options.
Are Lumecca IPL Treatments Painful?
Even though the Lumecca IPL is more potent than standard IPL procedures, the sapphire device tip creates a strong cooling sensation to minimize patient discomfort during treatment. Patients often compare the feeling to the snap of a rubber band on the skin. You’ll wear eye protection during the treatment and notice flashes of bright light. Because the procedure is non-invasive, there is no downtime needed.
How Should I Prepare for My Lumecca IPL Treatment?
In the month before your Lumecca treatment you should avoid:
- Direct, excessive sun exposure
- Tanning beds
- Waxing
- Chemical peels
- Drugs that increase your bleeding risk, such as aspirin and ibuprofen
- Creams or other products that contain vitamin A, such as Retin A, or glycolic acid
You should also let us know about any inflammatory skin conditions you have that might affect your healing time.
What Is it Like to Recover After a Lumecca IPL Treatment?
It's normal to notice that your skin feels a bit warm and appears slightly red for about an hour or so immediately after the treatment. During the next 24 to 48 hours, pigmented spots targeted during the procedure will start darkening. Those pigmented lesions will begin flaking off a few days later. Treated spider veins or other vascular lesions blanch and then disappear during the course of a few days. Side effects after a Lumecca treatment are rare and, if they occur, typically last only a few days. You should use sunscreen daily and avoid exposing the treatment area to direct sunlight.
How Long Do IPL Results Last?
Lumecca IPL treatments produce long-lasting results with minimal discoloration for a year or more. Maintenance treatments can help the results last even longer. During the consultation, we'll discuss daily skincare tips that will also help extend the results.
Most people find their IPL results last about a year, and even longer with annual touch-up treatments. You might need a couple of sessions to see your best results initially, which we’ll talk over with you during your consultation.
